“My parents were not being parents…my dad was taking my disability money away and not using it for me but for him.”
“You don’t know until you find out and at that time I was scared.”
“I was bullied in middle school and highschool because I was in special needs classes. They thought we were different, but we are the same as you, we just need help.”
Olivia was diagnosed at age 6 with moderate intellectual disability. She struggles with being rushed, considering she works slower compared to most.
In highschool Olivia's step-mom made her stay 5 years instead of 4 because she didn't want her to "go out in the college world and get bullied".
Olivia is a senior at Indiana Wesleyan University. She is also a student in the IMPACT Program (a program to help lead those with disabilities through college).
This program has helped her apply and obtain a job off campus, plan and host her wedding, and allow her to learn at a pace that’s best for her while achieving a degree.
Jason, Olivia’s husband, also has a disability. Together they navigate each others disabilities through the ups and downs of life. Jason struggles with ADHD and a bipolar disorder. Olivia takes on the responsibility of calming him down and helping him control his emotions.
“You know you have to learn to adapt, and try not to disrespect each other when these issues come out because it could get worse”
Olivia has lived a life full of challenges but she always looks at the positive and encourages others. She states,”I have a disability, and I’m married, I live on my own with my husband, I go to college, and I work”
